Like a crate-digging DJ searching for that perfect sample, we scour vintage stores, warehouses, and estate sales for the rare vintage papers and printed ephemera that give our Photoshop brushes that extra something special.

Every True Grit product begins with an aesthetic exploration through various source materials, physical tools, and print remnants. We experiment extensively, constantly cross-referencing source materials until digitally replicating our intended aesthetic becomes second nature.

With our target aesthetic now subtly stalking us in our dreams, we create a custom library of assets that serve as the raw materials for our Photoshop brushes. Have you ever spent multiple weeks obsessively creating, scanning, cleaning up, and cataloging hundreds of analog brush strokes? Of course, you haven't. You're not insane. But we are, and it's a crucial element of what imparts our Photoshop brushes with the authentic feel and tactility we've become renowned for (five stars, baby!).

Next, we import our high-def samples into Photoshop's robust brush engine, where they are expertly crafted into usable brushes from millions of potential settings combinations—so many settings combinations.

For those playing at home, this is as much of a grind as it sounds, involving days (sometimes weeks) of experimentation, fine-tuning, and real-world testing with our handpicked roster of professional illustrators to ensure each Photoshop brush meets our impossibly high standards for authenticity and usability.

How to import brushes into Photoshop?

Quick Install method

1. Open Photoshop.
2. Locate the .abr brush preset file on your hard drive.
3. Double click the .abr file to automatically install it into Photoshop.

The imported brushes will appear in your Brushes panel whenever the Brush Tool is selected.

Manual Install Method

1. Open Photoshop.
2. Open the Brushes Panel (Window > Brushes or Window > Brush Presets in older versions) and click the fly-out menu in the top right corner (three lines).
3. Select Import Brushes… then locate the .abr file on your hard drive and click Open to install.

The imported brushes will appear in your Brushes Panel whenever the Brush Tool is selected.

Can I use Photoshop brushes in Adobe Fresco?

Photoshop brushes are generally compatible with Adobe Fresco; however, functionality is limited in most True Grit brush packs since Fresco is a little underpowered compared to Photoshop on desktop and iPad. Many of our brushes will work nicely at their default settings but cannot be customized beyond changing the brush size whilst some brush packs are entirely incompatible.

For this reason, we do not recommend any of our brushes be purchased solely for use in Fresco. Find out which True Grit brushes are compatible with Adobe Fresco here.

Can Photoshop brushes be installed in Photoshop for iPad?

You bet! Photoshop for iPad can import and manage custom brushes, including all True Grit brush packs. Brush group folders are supported, and brush packs can easily be deleted. With this in mind, we recommend Photoshop for iPad over Adobe Fresco (see above).

Can I use Photoshop brushes in Procreate or other compatible apps?

Whilst technically compatible, our Photoshop brushes will not work close to as intended once imported into Procreate, Affinity, or any other app claiming to have Photoshop brush compatibility. In most cases, our brushes are too complex and will lose their texture and pressure sensitivity once imported into other apps.

How to uninstall Brushes in Photoshop?

1. Go to the Brushes panel (window > brushes).
2. Select the brushes or brush groups you wish to uninstall
3. Click the “trash” button at the bottom of the panel.
