In a game with no shortcuts, we’ve learned a thing or two. Fueled by this experience, our Procreate brushes are built from the ground up using ultra high-def, custom brush and texture samples. Like a crate-diggin’ dj searching for that perfect sample, we scour vintage stores, warehouses and estate sales for the rare vintage papers and printed ephemera that give our Procraete brushes that extra somethin’ somethin’.

Building killer Procreate brushes is no joke.

Combining creative instinct and a science-y dedication to experimentation, the process of building great Procreate brushes rarely rewards taking the easiest route. In an internet awash with random freebies, fly-by-night influencers, and shameless pretenders, it’s hard to sort the shit from legit.

Every True Grit product starts with an aesthetic deep dive through various source materials, physical tools, and print detritus. We experiment exhaustively, constantly cross-referencing source materials until digitally replicating our intended aesthetic becomes pure muscle memory.

With our target aesthetic now politely haunting us in our sleep, we build a custom library of assets that form the raw materials of our Procreate brushes. Ever spent multiple weeks obsessively creating, scanning, cleaning up, and cataloging hundreds of analog brush strokes? Of course, you haven’t. You’re not insane. But we are, and it’s a key part of what gives our Procreate brushes the authentic feel and tactility we’ve become known for (five stars, baby!)

Next, we import our high-def samples to Procreate’s powerful brush engine, where they are expertly crafted into usable brushes from millions of possible settings combinations – so many settings combinations.

Which versions of Procreate will TGTS Procreate brushes work in?

All of our Procreate brushes are designed to work with Procreate 5.0 or higher and are regularly optimized for the latest version to accommodate new Procreate features and ensure they work exactly as expected.

Are Procrete brushes vector or raster brushes?

All Procreate brushes are “raster” based brushes meaning that they are made up of millions of pixels which help give them their unique tactility and realistic aesthetic.

Can I install my TGTS Procreate brushes in any other apps?

No. Procreate .brush and .brushset file types are exclusive to Procreate and are not compatible with any other applications

However, most of our Procreate brush sets are also available for Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, and Affinity Photo. Just be sure to purchase the compatible version for each app you intend to use.

Do TGTS Procreate brushes work identically in other compatible apps such as Photoshop?

We strive to match the aesthetic of each brush set as closely as possible across each app they are available for, however, due to variations in how each brush engine works, it is not always possible to match brushes identically.

With this in mind, you should assume that it’s not always possible to seamlessly switch between apps, using the same brush or texture in both apps without noticeable variations. This is especially true of halftone pattern brushes such as Beat Tones, despite using identical source patterns in each app.

What iPads do TGTS Procreate brushes work on?

As a general rule, if you’re already running Procreate on your iPad, then our Procreate brushes will be compatible. The only exception is Debaser, which requires a full-sized iPad (2018 or later) or an iPad Pro.

How do you install Procreate brushes?

1. Download your brushes.
2. Go to the Files app, then locate the Downloads folder.
3. Tap the .zip file to expand the fileOpen the folder and locate the .brushet file.
4. Tap the .brushset file, then open Procreate to install the brushes automatically.
5. Once installed the brushes should appear a the top of your brushes menu.

Absolutely. Here’s how to install brushes in Procreate Dreams.

How do you change the scale of a Procreate brush’s texture or pattern?

Many of our brushes contain an embedded texture or pattern referred to in Procreate as the brush "grain". Knowing how to adjust this is especially helpful when using any pattern based brushes such as our Beat Tones Halftones, Lithotone, and Grain Shader brush sets.

1. Tap the brush you wish to edit twice to open the Brush Studio editor.
   Go to the Grain Tab
2. Adjust the Scale slider. You'll see the stroke preview change as you move the slider (whoah!).
3. Tap the Done button to commit the changes. Test and repeat if necessary.

How do you reset a Procreate brush to its default settings?

Any changes you make to a Procreate brush (including the brush size and brush opacity) are saved to the brush permanently until you reset it. This is really helpful if you're switching back and forth between different brushes and don't want to make the same changes over and over. We embedded reset points into all of our brushes so that you can easily restore a brush's settings with just a couple of steps if you've tweaked your brushes too much or just want to go back to the default.

1. In the Brush Studio editor, go to the About This Brush Tab.
2. Tap the Reset brush button.
3. Tap Reset when prompted then tap Done to commit the change. To reset an entire brush set, simply reinstall the brush set.
   

How do you edit the Procreate pressure curve?

Everyone draws a little differently whether it be the hand we draw with (lefty's unite!) our grip or the pressure we place on the screen. Pen pressure plays an important part in how Procreate responds so it's worth familiarizing yourself with Procreate's pressure curve settings to figure out what feels right for you and your drawing style.

1. Open the Actions menu (the tool icon). 
2. Tap the Prefs Tab.
3. Tap Edit Pressure Curve.
4. Tap and drag the graph to edit the Pressure Curve. Click here for examples of different curve settings.
   

Do Photoshop brushes work in Procreate?

Whilst technically compatible, our Photoshop brushes will not work close to as intended once imported into Procreate. In most cases, our brushes are too complex and will be either unusable or require significant time and experience adjusting to work in Procreate.

As you probably already know, Procreate brushes are incredibly fun and intuitive to use. All of our brushes are ready-to-use straight out of the box but we've compiled a few handy tips for making common edits to your brushes and restoring them to their default settings when things get weird.

How to change the scale of a brushes texture or pattern.

Many of our brushes contain an embedded texture or pattern referred to in Procreate as the brush "grain". The default grain scale for most of our brushes is about 30-50% and knowing how to adjust this is especially helpful when using any pattern based brushes such as our Beat Tones Halftones, Lithotone and Grain Shader brush sets.

1. Tap the brush you wish to edit twice to open the Brush Studio editor.
2. Go to the Grain Tab
3. Adjust the Scale slider. You'll see the stroke preview change as you move the slider (whoah!).
4. Tap the Done button to commit the changes.

Smooth out jittery strokes with Procreate's Streamline settings.

If you've had one too many coffees, or tend to make very slow brush strokes when drawing, you can average out jittery strokes for smoother results using Procreate's Streamline settings.

This feature is most useful for inking brushes but a word of warning, it may make your brush feel a little ropey or unresponsive when drawing very short strokes so test your settings and adjust if necessary.


To adjust a brushes Streamline settings take the following steps:

1. In the Brush Studio editor, go to the Stroke Path Tab. 
2. Adjust the Streamline slider.

How to make a copy of a brush and save it permanently with new settings.

Sometimes you might want to have multiple copies of the same brush with different brush sizes, texture scales and opacity settings ready to go to speed up your process and hit that deadline.



Take the following steps:

1. Swipe left on the brush you want to make a copy of.
2. Tap Duplicate.
3. Make any changes to the brush, such as brush size, grain scale or streamline settings. If you're making changes in the Brush Studio editor be sure to tap Done when you are satisfied to commit the changes.
4. Tap the brush twice to go back to the Brush Studio editor then tap About This Brush. 
5. Rename your brush with a modifier to set it apart from the original (eg Small, V2 etc).Tap Create New Reset Point, then tap Save when prompted.
6. Tap Done to commit the changes.

How to adjust your Apple Pencil's pressure settings.
